National Identity

About 3 weeks ago, Nicolas Sarkozy announced on France 2 the creation of a 'Ministry of Immigration and National Identity', an idea that has been criticised by French politicians like Segolène Royal and François Bayrou (the two other front runners for the French elections).

For most people, the 'Ministry of Imnigration and National Identity' is a frightening amalgam. 'Frightning' because it has been carefully elaborated by one of those guys who happen to lead our country. 'Amalgam' because the title implies that Immigration is a threat to National Identity.

When I first heard about Sarkozy's new idea, I thought of the 19th century. The 19th century in Europe is the best century ever because of all those artists, writers, freethinkers fed with literary residuals of the French Revolution, who realised that before God and before the elite, there was the people. They came out with the word "Society".

I also thought of the unification of Germany and Italy. The reconciliation of the state and the nation, boundaries as the limit of a political power and a cultural identity. Sounds obvious to you? Well, it's still a luxury. Look at how African states, a century later, were created out of... nothing. Not even geographical boundaries. Evaluate the consequences now.

Ivory Coast is the home of more than 50 different ethnos spanning over Burkina Faso, Ghana and other neighboring countries. Ivory Coast used to be considered one of the healthiest states in Africa avoiding, unlike other countries, conflicts between tribes. With the beginning of the Ivorian civil war in 2002 was born the concept of "Ivoirité" and the revendication of an Ivorian National Identity. The silliest idea I have ever heard, considering that half of the population living in Ivory Coast is immigrant. The silliest idea I have ever heard as I lived myself in Ivory Coast and hardly ever noticed racism against any kind of immigrants. I was talking about that last week to two Ivorians I met in London and we agreed on that point. I still have the feeling today that the emergence of this concern in Ivory Coast was not spontaneous, but originated by the government.

France and Ivory Coast might have much more in common than one would think then. In the 19th century, France was France and its map hasn't changed much since. When Italians were risorgimentingthe French were in the streets - yeah, that's what they do, the French - asking for bred and gold. They were not into the whole National Identity thing.

I really want to avoid falling into that bucket full of clichés denouncing this ministry of National Identity. I'm just going to wonder... Isn't that idea just historically hypocretical, misrepresenting society, the nation, and the state?

[Can someone help me rephrasing this last sentence?]

I agree, it is a quite dangerous concept, and I don't believe that it is meant to play in favour of immigration and integration... Especially when we look back at Sarkozy's speeches during last year's riots! Let's just hope that he will not be elected, and that his opinion is not shared by many.

On attend ton blog historique. Tu devrais vraiment...
